Treating the Family
We hear addiction is a family disease- but why, when, “he is the problem”? Families tend to cope with fear, crazy-making, and the chaos of addiction by keeping secrets and adopting other unhealthy behaviors, like preoccupation, denial, enabling, or blaming. Family members with the best of intentions may not recognize the small changes that occur as the disease begins to take over.
Ask Yourself
- Am I making excuses for my loved one’s behavior?
- Am I snooping and trying to find where my loved one hides alcohol or drugs?
- Am I constantly checking up on my loved one?
- Am I putting off plans with friends or family because I’m unsure what mood they will be in?
When facing a loved one’s addiction, remember the 3 Cs:
You didn’t cause it, you can’t control it, and you can’t cure it.
You can address the issue of alcohol or other drug addiction with your loved one. Still, any behavior change is up to them. Bridge to Recovery understands that with care and support, the family can work through the chaos and rebuild relationships based on honesty and responsibility.
You didn't cause it.
You can't cure it.
You can't control it.
