Trauma Treatment
Trauma is painful. It alters how people interact with others and how they understand or misunderstand themselves. It can lead to anxiety, self-harm, substance abuse, personality disorders, PTSD — the list goes on and on. The sooner we can access trauma-informed treatment, the sooner we can start to heal.
Trauma treatment can help individuals deal with the emotional response caused by traumatic events. It can help if you are unable to cope with the trauma you experienced or if it’s affecting your ability to function. Trauma-focused therapy helps individuals understand their trauma and address symptoms and problems in healthier ways.
There are three main types of trauma that patients may be dealing with:
- Acute Trauma stems from a singular traumatic experience, such as an accident, natural disaster, or sexual assault.
- Chronic Trauma occurs when a person experiences multiple, long-term, and/or prolonged traumatic events. Some examples include domestic violence, bullying, addiction, sexual abuse, and long-term illness.
- Complex Trauma is the result of multiple different traumatic experiences. Potential causes can include childhood abuse, domestic violence, or civil unrest.
Trauma
Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply distressing event or multiple events over time. If the mind is under enough stress, it can “break.” Whether or not you know your mind is “broken,” you may feel something isn’t right. Maybe your behavior is destructive, or you feel disconnected from yourself and others. Our therapists are trained to guide you toward healing.
Trauma Symptoms
- Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts
- Sleeping and eating disturbances
- Depression, fear, anxiety, and panic
- Avoidance, isolation, or withdrawal
